8.4V Tenergy 5000mAh Flat NiMH Battery Pack with Traxxas Connector Review

8.4V Tenergy 5000mAh Flat NiMH Battery Pack with Traxxas Connector

After hearing a lot of bad comments about Venom battery packs I decided to try this Tenergy pack out.

It's hard to tell in the picture, but the pack is fully sealed. From the image, it looked to me like the bottom cell was exposed, but the bottom cell is sealed on the packs I received.

I've run each of the 2 packs I purchased 3 times now and am getting good results. On my stock Traxxas Slash I get around 30 minutes of run time, and good power and speed.

I purchased a Piranha Digital Peak Charger NiCd/NiMH DTXP4005 and that charger shows the measured capacity of the battery. It's a very nice charger that's just a bit more then the Twin Peak Charger that Amazon typically recommends, but the information and memory settings for up to 10 different batteries makes it worth it.

After three cycles of charging, I get over 4,900 mAh from each pack (one pack charged to 4970 twice and the other 4930). While I'm not deep discharging the cells (which isn't recommended for NiMH cells anyhow), I also have a Radio Shack 2200 NiHM pack that I purchased years ago that I run till the vehicle barely moves and am able to get a full capacity on that.

So, I'm not seeing the promised 5000mAh of the cells, but for the price, I can get two of these packs for just a bit more then 1 Venom pack with the same specs.

Another note, the only Amazon Marketplace that sells these is the Battery Superstore, there was an issue with the shipping of this item, and it did arrive 1 day after Amazon's shipping window, after I contacted the vendor when I didn't see any tracking updates in a week. However, overall it seems the Battery Superstore has good reviews, so I may have just been unlucky.

UPDATE: After more charge cycles on these packs I am reaching 5000 mAh with them. The packs are a bargain (compared to other NiMH packs on Amazon) if you still want to go with NiMH packs.

Latest Update: I use these with the Slash. They work good with the stock engine, however, I've upgraded to the Velineon Blushless motor. The brushless motor causes the packs to get hotter. After using the packs a few times with the brushless setup, both packs no longer charge at 3 amps on the Piranha charger mentioned above. I was able to charge them at 2 amps, but it takes longer to charge. They also don't last as long at peak charge either. After running them at the 2 amp charge rate 1 pack no longer charges on the same setting and the other pack lasted all of 5 minutes after charging.

TSD Universal Smart Charger 7.2-12V for NiCad & NiMH batteries Review

TSD Universal Smart Charger 7.2-12V for NiCad & NiMH batteries

A universal smart charger such as this should be a standard part of any airsoft player's arsenal. By cutting the time it takes to charge batteries by perhaps over 80% it will make any player (and team, for that matter) increadibly more effective. Some reasons are as follows:

Metal gearbox Automatic Electric Guns (AEGs) are for the most part unrivaled in terms of overall capability on the airsoft field. Charging their batteries with typical wall chargers however takes many hours, necessitating that airsoft battles be planned far in advance. This smart charger thus enables you to play more impromptu.

Furthermore, with wall chargers the possibility of a failed or partial charge always exists. One may be in the middle of a day of airsoft and start to whitness their AEGs firepower rapidly decline until soon it lacks the power to shoot. Unless you have another battery on hand you will be done for the day, but with the rapid charger you can atleast make another attempt at recharging your battery.

This brings up another great point; that by having the ability to recharge your batteries in a reasonable period of time, the chance to play for far longer periods of time. If you have two or more batteries to alternate with, how long a day of airsoft lasts becomes limited now only by your pellet supply, personal, team, and opposition endurance, etc, but no longer by your battery. As with a true military campaign, having control of your logistics is often the key to victory. In airsoft you realize this when you whitness yourself reaching for your spring plinker to face a machinegun nest.

As for complaints, I have yet to find any noteworthy faults with this tool. Cost is a mentionable downside, as a total of around $32 for a charger may seem pricy compaired to working with the slow chargers that are normally packaged with your AEG. However, for a serious airsoft player, and even more so for a team, the convieniance combined with the additional hours and flexibilit of play will make the Universal Smart Charger well worth the cost.
