Makita ML143 14.4-Volt Fluorescent Light Review

Makita ML143 14.4-Volt Fluorescent Light
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This light came free when I purchased the drill driver combo. It is much better than the incandesant light I received from another Makita promotion. It will light up an attic or crawl space with ease. Just rember to have an extra battery with you, it goes out with NO warning does not flicker or go dim, just out! How can you complain about something for nothing, you can't! Tough light too. I have dropped it got it wet and it has not stopped working yet. I can't even remember how long I have had it and I have never changed the bulb. Look for drill/driver kits, this light is always free. If not 42 dollars light, 85 dollars battery 127 dollars? Drill/driver kit, two tools, two batteries, light and charger with a case. All for around two hundred dollars.
Free equals junk right, NOT with this light. I love it and use it all the time.

CYMA CM.022 Electric Airsoft Rifle Review

CYMA CM.022 Electric Airsoft Rifle
Average Reviews:

This gun with the hi-cap mag you can empty it in mabye 2 min. I'd use it in battles in my backyard but my friends would waste ammo. I had a target and fired full-auto and ripped it to shreds. The hop up system with the graduating sight( ladder sight) can give you some good range even though for about 10 meters you need to aim higher. When I got it the ring for the sling on the stock fell off, but I dont care. The thing about my gun is when you try to fire semi-auto it wont let you so do a burst in full-auto then you can us semi-auto. The normal mag is fille by filling a tube you put over theport on the mag and take a ram rod and ram it in the mags. The manual doesn't tell you how to load the hi-cap mag so heres how you do it. First the lightest mag is the hi-cap, so infront of the port you see a lever (sort of) and u have to pull it up and over and you see it open up thats where you put the bbs. Next close that thing and you see a gear at the bottom when you put the mag in the gun you turn it many times(you turn it counter-clock wise) until you hear a load click (not a click that you hear every time you turn the gear). Then you're ready to go Rambo on somebody or a target.

I do not know about the previous reviewer but I started with the 40K Stinger and am amazed at how bright it is. My only previous reference is Maglight and excuse the pun but they do not hold a candle to Streamlight. I have recommended these to my friends and would continue to do so.

Hitachi UB18D 14.4 - 18 Volt Cordless Flash Light Review

Hitachi UB18D 14.4 - 18 Volt Cordless Flash Light
Average Reviews:

This light is nothing short of awesome.Lasts a very long time on a single charge. It is incredibly bright. It reaches out there nearly as far as my dedicated spot light which will burn out on a single charge in less than 20 minutes which is several times less than the Hitachi(it takes several hours to recharge my spotlight and only 15 minutes to recharge the battery for the Hitachi!)The swivel head is great- I set it on the ground and tilt the head up to work on my atv in dark.I set it on a bumper and tilt the head down to hook up the trailer...
I used it throughout 2 weeks before recharging it for the second time- it was still going, I just don't like discharging my batteries too far.
It ways only a few ounces, so the only weight you'll be carrying is basically the weight of your battery.
I would pay 3x more if I had to replace it.

Bushnell Onix400 Waterproof Hiking GPS Review

Bushnell Onix400 Waterproof Hiking GPS
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is one of those products that can either be a great thing or can be a great disappointment...All dependent on actual need / intended use.

For me, it has been a great product that met my needs.I like to do a lot of camping and hiking in the middle of the woods and all I need from a portable GPS is just the basics.Let me mark locations, get me from the car to the camping site or marked locations and get me back. For this, I don't really need advanced features such as street routing, a POI database filled with restaurants, gas stations, etc. For that, I use the navigation system on my car.

Having said that, pretty much, any of the portable GPS devices meet my requirements but what attracted me to the Onix 400 was the addition of the XM Weather receiver. That extra feature, for me was worth the price as it does come in handy to be able to see when storms are coming, their severity and to be able to estimate roughly when it will be on top of you and how long it will be before it passes once is on top of you.

While the GPS with the Weather feature has been great on my outings, I do have a few complaints, which I did make sure Bushnell knew so that they can improve the product.

1. While XM does seem to work during bad weather provided the device is out on the open, it is useless when one is stuck inside a tent while waiting for the rain to stop. The GPS does have a connector to allow peripheral devices to be connected, including an external antenna, but Bushnell does not offer such an antenna. The closest they have is a headset with an antenna, but is not designed to take the role of a real external antenna. Cable is short and because of it being a headset, I don't believe it will be a good idea to leave it out on the rain for any extended periods of time.

2. The cost of extra batteries.Only Bushnell batteries can be used due to their design. These batteries are not cheap to be able to buy a couple of spares, so one has to trade real time info for battery life. Pretty much, to extend battery life, once you get to where you need to be (Camping Ground),turn the unit off and if the sky shows signs of bad weather approaching, turn it on, wait for the XM signal to update the Weather info, then turn it off again.

For me, this has not been a major issue, as turning the device off is what I would have done anyway with any other portable GPS without XM and turned it back on when on the move.Just thought other users may want to be aware of this.

In summary, if you are looking for a portable GPS specific to outdoor activities and would like to keep an eye on severe weather, this is a GPS for you.

If you want to use it as an MP3 player or for urban door to door navigation...

Have you looked at Tom Tom or Garmin?

American Hunter? 12V Multi-use Solar Charger Review

American Hunter? 12V Multi-use Solar Charger
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I ordered this item to use on my boat as a trickle charger for the 12v Battery. The item in the photo is in a plastic case and the photoappears to be the charger I have seen on other boats. That is why I placed the order. Unfortunately, I was shipped a different model in a metal casing -- which does not appear to be as weather proof. Rain and Saltwater appear to able to puddle and leak through seams in the corner. I doubt if the metal casing will be as corrosion resistant, durable, or as eco-friendly as the plastic unit pictured.

There were no instructions or specs provided for the unit. It is not clear how the mounting bracket should be installed. This unit may be fine indoors, in a car, or a dry environment.,but I doubt it will be found very durable in weather.

On the plus side, the unit appears to have more cell and may generate more amps than the unit photoed. Also, shipping was very, very, fast. Probably faster than anything I have ever ordered. In less than 4 days and it was at my front door.

Garmin Forerunner 405 Water Resistant Running GPS With USB ANT Stick (Black) Review

Garmin Forerunner 405 Water Resistant Running GPS With USB ANT Stick
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Update: after two months of using the 405, I have some additional observations. Based on my experiences, I would lower the star rating to 3 stars. The decrease in rating is due to incredibly poor software and support from Garmin. The hardware is still extremely impressive, despite the software failings.

Software and Support:

The Garmin Connect (which allows you to track your training progress) is nothing more than a beta with limited functionality and slow response times. Moreover, it is still very buggy. The software which automatically uploads the computer data to Garmin Connect just suddenly stopped working a month ago.

Hold times to get in touch with Garmin telephone support is 45 minutes. Email support is terrible - it has taken afull MONTH to have two email exchanges with support. All this and the problem has not been fixed.

Moreover, the software is poorly designed. You have to constantly monitor Garmin's website for software updates (there is no "Check for Update" feature). If a problem occurs in the software, there are no features to aid in resolving the problem.

Hardware:

First impressions: the form factor is nice, but you need to be aware that the watch is somewhat "thick". If you are wearing a button down shirt, the 405 will not fit comfortably under a sleeve cuff. However, looking at it from above, it looks like a normal watch. Wearing it while running will probably not draw a second look from other runners. This is also a downside since you want people to notice your shiny new 405.

Setup - this took only a few minutes and was very easy. TThe 405 walks you through a brief tutorial. Overall, setup was very easy.

Navigation - this takes a few minutes to get the hang of. Once you have the buttons down, it is quite easy to navigate. The sensitivity of the touch bezel is adjustable for your taste. I've played with the 305 in the store and the 405 actually seems more intuitive to navigate.

Initial lock - finding the satellites takes a few minutes the first time. It will lock on much faster if you are not moving. Subsequent times to find the satellites was much quicker.

Use - After you have turned on the GPS and gotten a lock, all you need to do is press start to begin your workout. It was very easy to use. I basically forgot about it while I was running other than to check my pace every mile or so. Kept a lock the entire time (keep in mind this was in Chicago's Lincoln Park - roughly 2/3rds of the sky is clear (except for trees) so achieving constant lock-on should not be a problem for any GPS. I have not tested this downtown).

For those worried about water resistance, my first usage of my 405 was in the pouring rain. It didn't seem to notice (or care) about the rain. It can handle a good amount of water without issue.

Syncing - you need to download the software from Garmin (it's actually a web plug in). However, the manual was clearly rushed out the door. Not only does it contain typos (at one point it refers to the wrong step) but it is not clear from the manual that you need to download the USB drivers. DO NOT put the ANT USB key into the computer until you have downloaded the specific ANT drivers from Garmin (so you have to download two different pieces of software - the plugin and the USB driver). If you plug the ANT key into the computer w/o the Garmin USB driver, Windows will find what it thinks is the correct driver (which is the wrong driver). The syncing will not work if you do this. Just a heads up.

I wish I owned a 305 to compare it to. In the Garmin store, the 405 did not see that much smaller than the 305, although the 405 was clearly more elegant. Functionally, I hear that they are extremely similar. You just need to personally evaluate whether the 405 is really worth the increased cost over the 205/305. Personally, I plan on keeping the 405.

Battery Life - After playing with it for 30 minutes, taking it on an hour's run and syncing it with my computer, it only used 12% of the battery life.

Product Description:
With the Forerunner 405, Garmin has finally put thepower of GPS location-based date into a sleek sport watch that can be worn all day. Runners no longer have to choose between function and fashion. Garmin's ANT + Sport wireless platform that wirelessly sends your data to your computer and a touch bezel that lets you change screens with a simple tap (no more fumbling for buttons) run make this not just a leap forward in GPS-enabled fitness devices, but in training devices period. Forerunner 405 comes in two color options - black or green.

The Power Of Location-Based Data

Anyone who has used Garmin's Forerunner 205 or 305 already understands the power that attaching location data to traditional measurements like distance, speed, time, calories burned, and heart rate can provide. Knowing exactly where you worked hardest, ran fastest (or most slowly), and lets you tailor your workouts to improve for specific distances, conditions, and types of terrain. It gives a complete picture of how you interact with every portion of your run.

Forerunner 405 comes in two color options - black or green
Train with a virtual partner
Watch Results
Loaded with serious training features, Forerunner 405 continuously monitors your time, distance, pace, calories and heart rate (when paired with heart rate monitor). Each run is stored in memory so you can review and analyze the data to see how you've improved.

The high-sensitivity GPS receiver sustains satellite reception, whether you're tackling a trail or jogging through the urban canyons of skyscrapers. The Forerunner 405 is water-resistant (IPX7) and can be used outdoors or indoors (with an optional foot pod), making it the ultimate year-round, all-weather training tool.

Forerunner 405 is available with or without a heart rate monitor (see the versions tab) to help you make the most out of your training. Versions with a digital heart rate monitor continuously track heart beats per minute. Train in a certain heart rate zone to improve your fitness level or compare your pace and heart rate to past performance on the same run.

The revolutionary patent-pending touch bezel on the face of the watch makes navigating the options easier than ever. Simply by tapping, holding or running a finger along the bezel, runners can begin a new workout, access their training history or challenge a Virtual Partner. The Forerunner 405 makes training with a Virtual Partner easy and efficient. Runners can adjust the Virtual Partner's pace without stopping in the middle of a workout, and the Virtual Partner is always on and ready for a challenge.

Run, Sync, Store and Share
One of Garmin's most ambitious decisions has been to approach fitness devices as a total platform with their "ANT + Sport" connectivity system. All of Garmin's new fitness devices, including the Forerunner 405, Edge 605 and 705 bike computers, and Forerunner 50 heart rate monitor watches, will interface wirelessly with any devices that are compatible wiht the "ANT + Sport" protocol, including devices from other manufacturers.

Once you've logged the miles, the ANT+Sport wireless technology automatically transfers data to your computer when the Forerunner is in range. No cables, no hookups. The data's just there, ready for you to analyze, categorize and share through Garmin's online community, Garmin Connect or optional Garmin Training Center software. You can wirelessly send workouts from your computer to Forerunner, too.

Share Wirelessly
With Forerunner 405 you can share your locations, advanced workouts and courses wirelessly with other Forerunner 405 users. Now you can send your favorite workout to your buddy to try, or compete against a friend's recorded course. Sharing data is easy. Just select "transfer" to send your information to nearby units.

Cross-Train
Take your training inside with the versatile Forerunner 405. Pair it with an optional foot pod to track your speed, distance and running cadence indoors when a GPS signal is unavailable. This new design clips onto your laces for easy removal and automatically turns on when you start moving. You can also add a speed/cadence bike sensor to track the speed and distance of your cycling workouts.

Be Part of A Community
In 2007, Garmin acquired Motion-based, the largest shared repository of customer-generated gps-based routes, courses and maps. This was a significant move for Garmin to support the gps user community and bring a wealth of route options to gps users. With a simple connection to your computer, you can join a worldwide network of cyclists and outdoor enthusiasts through Garmin Connect our new, one-stop site for data analysis an sharing.

You can also upload to optional Garmin Training Center software for further analysis. Garmin Training Center stores large quanities of workout and ride data. Some of the things you can do are

Review your workout data, including pace/speed, distance, time, calories burned; and if available, heart rate, cadence and detailed elevation.
View a detailed graph of your workout data, plotted over time or distance.
View a map of your workout that shows the exact path you traveled.

WELL MP5-A4 Airsoft Electric Rifle AEG Review

WELL MP5-A4 Airsoft Electric Rifle AEG
Average Reviews:

i gotta give this gun 5 stars because for 100$ its a remarkable gun. It definitely doesn't shoot 330 fps, more like 270-280 which is pretty impressive for the price. if you do buy the gun i would reccomend getting a classic army clip because the one it comes with is cheap and made out of plastic. Its got a nice rate of fire and great accuracy, just don't try to snipe anybody out. I don't think it can be compared to classic Army, but definitely as good as tokyo marui (better than utg).

Golf Buddy Tour GPS Range Finder Review

Golf Buddy Tour GPS Range Finder
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I read all the reviews and compared all the features of golf GPS's before selecting the Golf Buddy Pro.I especially liked the feature that all the courses and course information were already loaded on the unit or available for free from the Golf Buddy website. And of course, that large color screen. When I received the unit, I immediately put it on the charger while I reviewed the User Manual...it's pretty slim because the unit does most functions automatically. The next day I went golfing.Within 5 minutes, the unit initallized and indicated I was on the first hole of Highlands Reserve. The unit advanced automatically hole by hole without any user input from me. The GPS seems very accurate and the screen is exceptionally bright in all lighting conditions. I did notice that if your riding a cart, it takes a few seconds for the unit to stablize after stopping before giving an accurate distance. I am now using some of the more advanced features including adding and editing my own hazards, measuring distances hit, and keeping track of my scores.Ok, does it really help your game. The answer is yes!

Click Here to see more reviews about: Golf Buddy Tour GPS Range Finder

Product Description:
Take the guesswork out of your golf game with the GolfBuddy Tour, a true GPS unit with automatic course and hole recognition. The GolfBuddy Tour--which comes pre-loaded with course information from across the world--helps you gain confidence on the course by telling you exactly how far and where to go with every shot. The unit is equipped with a large, easy-to-read screen that gives you the exact distance to greens, bunkers, lakes, lay-up points, and hazards. The view of the green is dynamic, meaning the GolfBuddy Tour changes the shape of the green depending on your angle of approach. Need to know whether the trees on the right are in play, or whether the far bunker is within range of your 7-iron? Just grab the GolfBuddy Tour and it provides all the information you need. Plus, there's no need to aim the GPS to obtain distance information, as the GolfBuddy Tour automatically recognizes your surroundings. Just turn it on and play.
How the GolfBuddy Tour Works
The GolfBuddy Tour offers a number of features that help you take your golf game to the next level. The score tracking feature, for example, lets you record up to 1,000 rounds, and includes tags for the course and date. This helps you calculate your handicap and track your progress over time. The GolfBuddy Tour also calculates the actual distance you hit with each club--a critical component for lowering your scores. Just mark your starting position, hit your shot, and walk to where the ball landed. And to help you improve your course management skills, the GolfBuddy Tour tracks your distance from the green (front, center, and back) at all times and the distance of all in-play hazards. The unit lists every item that can affect your play, even if you can't see it from your present location. The GolfBuddy Tour even provides the lay-up (approach) and carry distances for each hazard, so you'll know how to effectively bypass the ponds and sand traps that lay in wait.
Perhaps the coolest feature, however, is the automatic course recognition. Rather than requiring you to sort through thousands of pre-loaded courses, the GolfBuddy Tour automatically locates your course and hole the minute you turn it on. This helps you keep your mind focused on your game rather than your GPS unit.

Good airsoft kit for the beginner
Comes with goggles, which are not bad, wish they were not tinted though.

Also comes with a pistol P70 that runs on 4 AAA batteries.I have not been able to get this pistol to work and plan on calling Crosman (heard their customer service is good - I hope so)I wish it was a spring operated gun like the P-36 but it's not.The holster that holds the pistol is very good quality and impressive.

The main gun the R71 seems to be built fairly sturdy. The stock is removable by pushing a button and sliding upwards.
The "silencer" is removable by unscrewing it, thus making gun much shorter without the stock or silencer.
The gun shoots fairly quickly, but it is hard/impossible to aim due to the BB reservoir being the fake scope that you can't look through (probably the only negative about this gun). You can't remove the "scope" because then you would have but maybe 5 BB's in the chamber.
There are 3 settings safe, semi automatic and full automatic.

I've tested .12 and .2 gram BB's and both shoot decently with this gun.
This gun is not strong enough to shoot through cans or card board etc like more expensive guns but is why I think it's good for kids and beginners and I will easily give this a 5 star rating if customer service works out an exchange for the pistol and it is as good as the rifle.

Edit 1/5/10:Customer service was prompt and great and they are replacing the pistol that didn't work.Because of this I easily give this package a 5 star rating.Kids are still having a ball with them!I will edit how the P70 pistol is when It arrives.

Good package I recommend it.

Desktop Rapid Charger 110Vac Review

Desktop Rapid Charger 110Vac

This rapid charger now costs about as much as the radio !!

Standard Radio Co. discontinued this model in July 2009, but internet retailers have hundreds of them according to stock inventory, and the price, as of late August, is now somewhere under $70 -- an incredible value.

The successor, the HX280S, appears to be distinguished only by a higher capacity battery.

The factory battery for the HX270S now costs nearly as much as the radio, but the factory operator's manual says you can expect about 300 recharging cycles out of the pack. That's a lot of use.

Moreover, addressing my concerns about finding a battery years after the radio has gone out of production, Standard Radio includes an alkaline battery pack that takes six conventional "AA" cells. You will find these anywhere.

Single-use AA batteries, including the newest "lithium" type cells, provide the best way to configure an emergency radio for the jump bag on your boat. You simply put a fresh set in there at the start of the season, and you KNOW they're fresh up and ready to go.

(Rechargeables of all types lose their charge sitting in the bag, even when the radio is turned off.)

Performance reviews are everywhere. Add me to the list of those who find the receive audio clear, nice and LOUD if you need it, and with a good midrange for voice clarity.

Transmit audio is also good, but take care to speak closely to the small pinhole to the right of the LED. They've set the mic gain for close-talking to cut background noise. So if you're more than an inch from the speaker grill/mic hole, the volume of your transmitted audio is very low.

Receive sensitivity is excellent, and the ability of the receiver to reject a transmitted signal from a nearby radio on a (different channel) is very good. This is crucial in crowded harbor areas and along city waterfront where there are many signals from multiple sources NOT on the channel you're using.

The catch that holds the battery packs is a little questionable. The tab, on a hinge, has only a small plastic ridge that sits in a groove when you snap it over the back of the battery housing. I will watch out that this does not wear out, causing that catch to fly open. The company says the fit is watertight, and guarantees it against moisture damage.

The radio is water resistant; consider it safe against splashes as well as if you're in the water with it radioing for help. (Don't go diving with it.) If you want it to float, get one of those waterproof radio bags for $15 and use the elastic straps on the bag to keep it handy. There's a clip for the back of the radio that you do NOT have to install if you plan on using a waterproof bag (that makes the radio slimmer).

Programming the radio is unremarkable. Eight positions can be filled with a combination of weather channels and marine VHF channels, and the radio can detect the severe weather signaling tone from the National Weather Service. This allows you to put the radio on scan and hang it from your bimini top or wherever, and if a storm kicks up you get an alert tone.

The scan rate is very rapid within the VHF marine channels. If you include any weather channels, the scan circuit hangs on those channels looking for the presence of this severe weather tone. Not big issue.

The function "BEEP" is a constant irritant on digital cameras, radios, GPS and all manner of consumer electronics. The HX270S allows you to DEFEAT the BEEP with a setting labeled STFU. I don't know what this means. Probably Japanese for "mute."

Good radio. Go get one before they sell out.

FINIS SwiMP3.1G Waterproof MP3 Player Review

FINIS SwiMP3.1G Waterproof MP3 Player
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After water damaging my iPod Classic in H2O Audio Amphibx Waterproof Armband for Large MP3 Players and Phones I purchased this FINIS SwiMP3.1G Waterproof MP3 Player and am glad that at least I will not water damage the MP3 player. Going by the reviews on Amazon, as of February 1, 2010, 3 of 9 reviewers of Amphibx large arm band damaged their iPods (only one replaced by H2O Audio), versus none of the 19 reviewers complains about water damage to this SwiMP3 player. Of the 124 reviews of the earlier 250 Mb version of SwiMP3 player, I scanned about 80 and no one has claimed water damage. This would indicate that this is really the only truly waterproof MP3 player! Here are the pros and cons.

PROS
1. Water proof. This is the biggest advantage of this player and is the essential pre-requisite; notwithstanding the claimed advantages of other players, if the MP3 player is not waterproof, every thing else is irrelevant!
2. Small size and low profile.
3. No drag while swimming.
4. Fairly good quality sound.
5. Easy to load music. You can use Explorer In Windows or Finder in Mac to drag and drop MP3 files. iTunes does not work with SwiMP3 but you can download a free software, for Mac & Windows, called DoubleTwist which works somewhat like iTunes for music with any MP3 player or cell phone that shows up as a drive on your computer. DoubleTwist does not support podcasts and audiobooks unlike iTunes.

CONS
1. The cap for USB port is not tethered and could be easily lost.
2. Lacks the screen and polished user interface of iPod: playing MP3 file from where you left off, removing all played podcasts etc.
3. The items play in the order they were loaded. You can skip forward and back, one at a time, but that is about it as far as controls.
4. The buttons are not etched, so hard to figure out with just fingers while swimming in water. You have to remember the location of buttons.
5. Does not come with ear plugs but over the water sound is much better if you are wearing the ear plugs. In my experience it is essential to have ear plugs or snorkel dry or better still, both. Mack's AquaBlock Earplugs, 2 pr is what I use and they work well.
6. Needs goggles which have to be bought separately. Although I use Speedo Vanquisher Swim Goggle, the air-tight seal is probably better in Speedo Air Seal Tri Goggle, Mirrored.
7. User's guide leaves a lot to be desired. Mostly it concentrates on is how to load music but there are no instructions on where to place the player, how to use it with goggles etc. On FINIS web site there is a video that shows how to wear them with goggles.
8. You cannot fast forward or backward.
9. Very hard to figure out when the MP3 player is off because the green light is barely perceptible in bright light and comes on very transiently. You have to cup with hand to make it dark. Sometime pressing it for 3 seconds does not turn it off, and as soon as you plug into the USB, it starts playing again.
10. No way to find out how much juice is left.
11. Just deleting the songs does not remove them from the player, it just moves them to the Recycle Bin and the songs keep playing. Soyou have to empty the Recycle Bin. In Mac, this problem is even worse, because the Trashes folder is hidden.

TIPS & TRICKS
Here are few other things that I found.
1. If you place MP3 files in folders then the folders work like playlists and you can toggle playlists by pressing forward and back buttons simultaneously. But it works for maximum of 3 playlists. You can also make and download playlists using DoubleTwist. If you change the name of any folders, that playlist will be lost and you will left with only two. Don't change the names of initial three folders, just keeping changing the songs. On Mac you can use iTunes to make three playlists and then drag them to the SwiMP3 disk icon which is called NO NAME; but again do not change the name of initial three playlists, you will lose it if you do and then the only way to go back to three playlists will be by reformatting the SwiMP3 hard drive in FAT32 format
2. The volume on some podcasts, for example most NPR ones, is really low and can be increased by using a free windows software called MP3 gain.

For about 14 years I used Speedo FM radio which has no screen and fits on the goggles. It worked really well, the earphones rarely came out of the ear. But I wanted to listen to podcasts while swimming and after looking at all the choices I purchased H2O Audio Amphibx Waterproof Armband for Large MP3 Players and Phones and the accompnying H2O Audio Surge Waterproof Headphones.

What a disaster! Within six weeks the arm band leaked while swimming, let the water come in and damaged the iPod Classic. Although H2O Audio promises to replace the MP3 player damaged in their armband, they refused to do that and sent me this response:

"During the examination and testing the engineering team did notice some dispersed indentation on the seal (black door frame to the lid). This is indicative of some object(s) or debris being caught between the door and the seal. This type of obstruction can lead to leak as the water-tight seal is never actually formed between the lid and the bladder...So unfortunately, this is a situation where it appears that the door was not closed properly or that it was accidently opened during use."

Personally, I feel that SwiMP3 player is the only true waterproof MP3 player but the following also claim to be waterproofto listen to MP3 audio while swimming:

1. WATERPROOF CASES/ENCLOSURES for iPods:Most well known, and even promoted by Apple on its web site is H2O Audio Amphibx Waterproof Armband for Large MP3 Players and Phones. Since I listen more to podcasts and audiobooks, I wanted something that will work with iPod. So I purchased this Amphibx Waterproof Armband for Large MP3 Players and Phones. But within 6 weeks it leaked and damaged my expensive iPod. Big loss. H2O Audio refused to take any responsibility for the product or the damage caused by the armband. Not to say that H2O Audio Surge Waterproof Headphones constantly keep coming out of the ear, cause drag and have poor audio quality.

H2O Audio also makes H2O Audio ISH4-5A1 Interval 3G Waterproof Headphone System for iPod Shuffle 3rd Gen, but after H2O Audio refused to replace my iPod Classic, damaged in their armband, I am not ever going recommend H2O products to anyone.

Aquapac Waterproof Case Fits iPhone and Droid is not very good quality and it is hard to water proof with headphones. Most of these case leak and water damage to your expensive MP3 player.

2. WATERPROOF MP3 PLAYERS WITH HEADSETS: These are goggle based solutions likeSpeedo LZR Aquabeat MP3 Player and Freestyle Audio 200SPT Soundwave Waterproof 2GB Blue MP3 Player Blue Bundle With Aquapac 916 Waterproof Headphones. But the reviews of all these products on Amazon are not very good.

SwimMan makes waterproof 2nd and 3rd generation iPod shuffles. But they do not have screens and do not last long. Many users have complained that iPod Shuffles get damaged after few uses.

3. BONE CONDUCTION TECHNOLOGY MP3 PALYERS WITHOUT HEADSETS: This FINIS SwiMP3.1G Waterproof MP3 Player with its pros and cons listed above. Audio Bone makes bone conduction headsets, which are even more expensive that SwiMP3 player! Now who would buy that?

We all know that iPod is the best MP3 player and we would like to use it while swimming but I do not think it is yet technically feasible to make iPod water proof, notwithstanding the claims of companies like H2O Audio and SwimMan. Although I miss the screen, FINIS SwiMP3.1G Waterproof MP3 Player is really water proof, just like my old Speedo FM radio, and the audio quality is acceptable. As far as I can make out based on my and others experiences, iPod is sooner or later water damaged no matter what the technology they use to waterproof. FINIS SwiMP3 1 G is what I would recommend to a swimmer who wants to listen to MP3 audio while swimming.

Product Description:
Provides the same high quality sound and features as the FINIS SwiMP3 v2 Waterproof MP3 player with an upgraded processor and memory (1 GB). Unlike standard waterproof MP3 players--which transmit sound through the air or water and produce only a muffled noise when submerged--the SwiMP3.1G relies on your bones to conduct the sound. This direct transfer of sound vibrations from the cheekbone to the inner ear produces exceptional sound clarity, so you can listen to all of your favorite tunes while working out or taking a leisurely swim. And you needn't worry about damaging your hearing, as bone conduction hearing is a safe, well-established hearing mechanism in humans. Rather, this is the first time an audio company has leveraged the technology to enhance the experience of swimmers, tri-athletes, surfers, synchronized swimmers, and anyone else involved in general water activities.

Pelican LED Tactical Flashlight Review

Pelican LED Tactical Flashlight
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Impressed by all the favorable reviews, I ordered the light. In general, it works very well.

HOWEVER, what they don't tell you, is the battery cannot be easily replaced in the field, so if you get into a situation where the rechargeable battery runs down, you don't just pop in a replacement cell. Although the manual basically says unscrew the tailcap, remove the old battery, and reinstall the new one, it's a real ordeal to remove the cell. It will not happen in the dark, in a hurry, and without making a lot of noise.

When I called Pelican to ask about the apparent disconnect between the instructions in the manual and how the light is actually built, I received a "Why would you need to change the battery in the field?" response. Well, the run time is about an hour, the recharge time is about four hours, and some people might have an urgent need to quickly change out a dead rechargeable cell.

I thinks the light is a quality product, but the engineering is marginal, and customer service is far less than I would have expected.

Standard Horizon STD-HX370S VHF Marine Radio Review

Standard Horizon STD-HX370S VHF Marine Radio
Average Reviews:

We have four of these handhelds where I work, on ocean-going tug/barge units. They're about 2 years old now and have taken a good hard licking through all four seasons, in every kind of precipitation imaginable, at least several hours of operation a day, being dropped at least once per use, and have held up great. The only problem I can tell is that the belt clip broke off on one after being dropped for the umpteenth time, and thats not very significant at all.We use the optional remote mics exclusively and they tend to send groggy transmissions when wet, but easily solved by a sandwich baggy and a rubber band.Have had to replace a few of those, again for their having been dropped one too many times, but thats another review. The button layout is pretty straight forward, any deckhand could decipher how to use it without problems.Button locking feature comes in handy, find that you will always inadvertently change something without it when slipping it into you back pocket. We don't really use any of the more indepth features, so I can't really comment on those, but from experience it is a workhorse in all kinds of weather even in drenching rain, pretty much akin to being submerged.

Product Description:
Keep on top of emergencies while staying in touch with other boaters with the Standard Horizon STD-HX370S handheld two-way VHF radio. Specifically designed for marine use, the HX370S is factory programmed with all U.S., Canadian, and international marine channels, keeping you fully informed of all the latest oceanic activity. At the same time, the radio offers a host of weather channels from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA), so you can learn about approaching storms or hurricanes well before they hit. And if that weren't enough, it's also compatible with up to 40 commercial Land Mobile Radio (LMR) channels with CTCSS or DCS signaling, though a Standard Horizon dealer will need to program the channels (and users are responsible for obtaining the appropriate FCC license).
As with any well-built marine radio, the HX370S is rugged and fully waterproof, with a compact design that can withstand submersion in 1 meter of water for 30 minutes. It's also a breeze to browse through the channels using the scan function, either without priority (starting from lowest to highest) or while monitoring emergency channels 16 and 9 and the NOAA weather alert, which warns you of inclement conditions. Other operational details include a Preset key that easily recalls your eight most-used channels, an oversized LCD with channel names, and a high-intensity strobe light that emits the internally recognized S.O.S. signal during emergencies--a must for any boater. The S.O.S. beacon can be seen from up to 1 mile away.
When you're not using the 5-watt radio, simply drop it in the included charging cradle, which will keep the rechargeable NiMH battery operating at full capacity (the radio lasts for roughly 18 hours per charge). Also included is a waterproof alkaline battery tray, a 12-volt charger, and an AC charger. And because dead batteries can be a serious safety hazard on the water, the HX370S sports a battery life indicator on the LCD that warns you when the battery needs charging. Also compatible with optional speaker microphones, headsets, and voice scramblers, the HX370S radio measures 2.3 by 3.7 by 1.2 inches (W x H x D) and is backed by a three-year warranty.
