Sunlinq Portable Solar Panel Charger 6.5W 12V Review

Sunlinq Portable Solar Panel Charger 6.5W 12V

Bought this, plugged in my iPod and as long as the iPod was powered off, while in the strong sun, it provided trickle charge. When i tried to charge with power on it would not charge at all and the battery was drained. Not what I expected.

Update:I tried recharging my laptop and it works but power must be off. I was also able to charge my iPad but only with power off.

I guess this will work on most gadgets as long as the power is off. I am curious whether I should get a voltage regulator. I don't know if my gadgets or the Sunlinq will stop trying to charge once the batteries are 100%.For now I will just watch carefully.

Black & Decker FSL18FL FIRESTORM 18 volt Cordless Flashlight Review

Black & Decker FSL18FL FIRESTORM 18 volt Cordless Flashlight
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought my Firestorm 18 Volt as part of a set. Black and Decker is the cheapest of all multi-tool to one battery brand. For me, the craze started with a Leaf Sweeper that was battery powered. The "Leaf Blower" only works for 30 minutes and loses most of it's power within the first 15 minutes or so. Anyway, I bought a set that included a drill, hand vac, flashlight and another battery. The hand vac is a joke, while the rest I have found very useful. Surprisingly, the flashlight was the best purchase of all. The light is brighter than most cheap large flashlight and it's design makes it perfect for many different jobs. Sadly, after a couple of years of use the bulb has finally blown. Normally, this would be no big deal, but THERE are no common Replacement BULBS! I have looked everywhere. The only place that I have found with replacements offer them at $2 a bulb or 10 for $15 with $7 shipping. I originally spent $40 for the collection of tools and now I find out the Flashlight was worth $30 by itself. I suggest one save their money, but the flash light is still pretty good for the money. The best advice is to buy it with a set of tools, so you get your money's worth.

Currie EZip Trailz Men's Electric Bike Review

Currie EZip Trailz Men's Electric Bike
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After three test-rides, and having contemplated retro-fitting one of our existing bikes with a Currie electric drive, we decided to go ahead and purchase this bike.As the adage goes, "you get what you pay for" - which is certainly the case with this bike.I didn't expect top-of-the-line componentry, but I did expect better functionality with certain aspects of the build.

As I've ridden it around town, I found that the shifting is a bit clumsy - even after numerous adjustments to the derallieur.I was also aware of the total weight when I purchased it - nearly 70 lbs when one battery is installed - and have come to the conclusion that it is NOT a bike an average person can easily ride around without frequently using the electric assist; it's really a tank (even compared with my Xtracycle loaded with 50 lbs of groceries).I also was sad to discover that my Sunlite pannier could not be attached to the non-battery side of the rear rack because the hooks (on panier) are not set wide enough apart to span the battery placement gap.Another everyday annoyance is the fact that there is no quick-release lever on the front wheel making it a pain if you need to remove the wheel (flat, transport, etc.).

Maybe I can overlook most of the above, but the real headaches came when I got a flat on the rear tire. There is nothing - in Currie's documentation or on their website - that gives any indication on how to remove the rear wheel when you need to replace a tube.I searched forums and everywhere else I could, and came learn that in order to remove the rear wheel, you have to REMOVE THE ENTIRE MOTOR ASSEMBLY - which is not a simple procedure. And, since the motor/drive housing is hardwired (rather than having a plug-in connection) you have to figure out a way to support the motor while it is hanging disconnected from the wheel. This was the worst flat-repair job I have ever had to deal with - and definitely not something that could be accomplished out on the road, even if you had all of the tools you end up needing.I immediately went and replaced both tires with puncture-proof (resistant) tires - and if you are considering buying one of these bikes, I would definitely recommend you have this change made, preferably before you take delivery.

Bottom line: So far the electric assist modes have worked well during riding. It is a heavy, clumsy bike - and really meant to be ridden with the electric motor engaged most of the time, rather than without.I'm not convinced that the distance ratings are accurate.I suspect a more truthful average is 15-18 mi/per single battery. I am totally not impressed with the support or documentation offered by the manufacturer (Currie), and I see alot of room for small but significant improvements on the basic bicycle (quick releases, please!!!).Worth the $500? ... the verdict is still out for me.I think you can buy a higher quality commuter bike for a similar pricetag - it all depends how much effort you are looking to save riding an ebike.

Bicycles are a terrific mode of transportation, but sometimes you just need a little extra push while getting around town. Enter the eZip Trailz men's electric comfort bike, which is equipped with a 450-watt DC earth magnet motor and a 24-volt rechargeable battery. Far cleaner than gas-powered scooters but zippier than a traditional bike, the Trailz will get you from point A to B in no time at all, but won't guzzle gas or belch pollutants in the process. The battery offers a range of 15 to 22 miles per charge, so you can make it back and forth to the grocery store several times without running low on power. And once you're on the road, the Trailz boasts a top speed of 15 miles per hour (contingent on the rider weight)--plenty fast enough for most bike-friendly city streets. Is your work commute too far to walk but close enough that a car seems wasteful? Turn to the Trailz, which comes with a rear rack to carry groceries and other gear.

SteriPEN Adventurer Handheld Water Purifier Review

SteriPEN Adventurer Handheld Water Purifier
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have used the SteriPEN Adventurer for a week of backpacking in Colorado.Several days involved sterilizing what you would ordinarily call "good" water from running streams. But, several days included taking water from a lake in an area with heavy human use (no human waste management like a pit toilet). The water was obviously questionable and I was concerned that the SteriPEN would not be up to the challange. But, the only way to know was to try it, so I did.No illness at all.Got at least 50 quart sterilizations with one set of two CR123A batteries (non-rechargable).The product and its single LED signals take a little getting used to, but my experience convinces me it does the job.

It is very rugged - though I always worried about breaking the bulb.I took no special precautions carrying it.Simply stowed the provided hard shell and poly-canvas carry bag in the backpack with other gear.It traveled without problem.

Product Description:
Great for hiking and camping, this handheld water purifier destroys viruses, bacteria, and common protozoa. It weighs just 3.6 ounces with two non-rechargeable, disposable batteries (included) and purifies 16 ounces of water in 48 seconds, or 32 ounces in 90 seconds. The purifier employs ultraviolet light (UV) to destroy the DNA of microorganisms, making them unable to reproduce and cause illness. It's effective against outdoor microbes like giardia and cryptosporidium; pathogens that cause diarrhea, dysentery, hepatitis, and Legionnaire's Disease; household germs such as bird flu, E. coli, and salmonella; staph and strep; and natural-disaster risks like botulism, cholera, smallpox, and typhoid.
No pumping, no chemicals, no test strips, no timekeeping, no lubricating, and no replacement filters are required. All that is required is to push the water purifier's button (once for 32 ounces, twice for 16 ounces), place the pen-like lamp in clear water, and stir until an indicator light turns green. Water has no aftertaste after being purified. Measuring 6.1 inches long, the purifier comes with a nylon case and a user's guide. It exceeds U.S. Environmental Protection Agency guidelines for testing microbiological water purifiers.

12V Car Socket Rechargeable Flashlight Review

12V Car Socket Rechargeable Flashlight
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The title says it all. Is made to fit god knows what kind of lighter socket, certainly not a standard car socket, as it fits neither of my two cars, a Toyota and a Jeep. Comes with a flimsy plastic 10 cent "adapter" to make it fit regular lighter sockets, which has already broken on one of the two I bought. And where in the world would one get a replacement for that???!

Also, there is a red indicator when the light is charging, however one must twist the bezel to find that charging spot, which is a fuzzy connection that goes on and off with the slightest movement, making it almost impossible to steadily charge the thing. The charge spot does not click or stay in place, and you can spend ten minutes of frustration just finding the spot, only to lose it to the first bump on the road.

Here is a product that is a great concept rushed to production with no research, testing or forethought in its design and construction.

American Hunter 12 Volt Solar Panel with Mount Review

American Hunter 12 Volt Solar Panel with Mount
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
when you purchase something like this, you would want to have all the technical specifications IN ADVANCE so you are not surprised.... so this is what you would really get if order this one:
FeederMax#20578 12-volt solar charger. It is NOT the one pictured with the clips, but it does have a protective flex conduit around the cable. It is sold as a solar pannel (which it is of course) but what it is really made for is a very low power charger- specifically it is only 1.26Watts.... ya just can't do much with that.with no load on it, in bright sun it generates 20 volts (so be careful with small devices) but the box says max 18V.
So if you are a hunter and need a to charge something small for low use, this might be great, but other applications- not so much.

SolaDyne Radio and Flashlight Review

SolaDyne Radio and Flashlight
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The main aspects of this product's design that I found impressive were:
1) The plastic lens in the flashlight focuses the beams of the three LEDs so that they converge into a single bright spot, no matter whether the objects to be illuminated are one foot away or across the room.
2) The built-in NiMH battery is user-replaceable (although locating a replacement may be somewhat of a challenge, as it is a miniature battery pack similar to what would be found in a cordless phone).
3) Standard, commonly used connectors are used throughout: the 4.5 volt "cell phone charger" output comes out of a 3/32 jack (tip positive) that the supplied phone charger cord plugs into; the 5-6V DC charger input comes in through a mini-USB connector. An adapter is supplied that converts the mini-USB input to a miniature coaxial power connector (center positive), allowing the flashlight to be charged from a "wall wart" or cigarette lighter adapter, provided that its output is 6V.

The radio is intended to receive local stations.Do not expect to do any extreme DXing with it or to pull in distant stations that are next door on the dial to nearby stations (the selectivity is mediocre on both bands, and on FM, the tuner's AFC will jump onto the stronger signal). If you want to enjoy music in stereo, get a Walkman (the radio is mono, although the headphone jack has been wired so that it can be used with stereo headphones or earbuds). These characteristics make the radio best suited to an emergency preparedness kit, for the purposes of hearing weather bulletins or other information. If you take this product camping in remote areas, you may find that the only stations you can hear reliably are 50,000 watt clear-channel AM stations after sunset (at least if you are in North America).

Things started to go awry with the radio about two months after I bought this product. The audio from the built-in speaker would ocassionally cut out.I opened the radio and discovered that the problem was due to a poorly soldered connection to the headphone jack. This was fixed by reflowing the solder with a pencil iron.I was also able to greatly improve the sensitivity at the high end of the AM dial by tweaking a trimmer capacitor.I was pleasantly surprised by the serviceability of this design (I thought that serviceable products were a thing of the past), but this does not make up for the fact that the quality of the soldering and of the tuner alignment were lousy.

Freeplay Energy Eyemax WB 2009 Self-Sufficient AM/FM/Weatherband Radio, iPod/mp3 dock and LED Flashlight (Black) Review

Freeplay Energy Eyemax WB 2009 Self-Sufficient AM/FM/Weatherband Radio, iPod/mp3 dock and LED Flashlight
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We purchased this radio after trying the CC Observer, probably its closest contender.I wanted a crank-type emergency radio with weather band that I would want to use everyday at home or work.

The CC Observer had great reception for AM and FM, but the sound was tinny and when the volume was increased, the speaker distorted much quicker than I thought it should. These were not deal breakers, though. However, what was a deal breaker were the non-adjustable weather station settings, as the one we received was slightly mistuned and gave us a very distorted, but solid, reception.C Crane told me to return it and that there was no way to adjust that setting.

Not wanting to take a risk on another, we bought this radio. When it came in, I immediately raised the antenna and a portion of the antenna popped off, along with two copper contacts.I put them back together and more gently pulled and again it came off.So I put it back together and left it alone, trying the other functions.

The crank is solid and seems to give a good return on energy spent. If you read other reviews, it is this crank mechanism that people think is best about Freeplay items--it has the highest efficiency of energy conversion and it is the most durable of any available. The Freeplay website says you can get one hour of radio from one minute of winding, and I have achieved almost double this at half full volume with one minute of very fast (and hard) winding (160+ turns in one minute).

It has a fully adjustable, separate dial for weather, that easily received our station clearly, despite the initial antenna problem.Likewise, AM and FM came through strongly, but with less discrimination of stations than the CC Observer had (there was more bleed through of adjacent stations with the Freeplay Eyemax WB 2009).Also, there was more noticeable drift just before the battery died than with the CC Observer. That said, all stations sounded much better with the WB 2009 and the speaker didn't distort anything like the CC Observer did, probably because the speaker is fairly larger in the Eyemax.Additionally, reception was similar, but not as good, as the CC Observer on both AM and FM.I had no trouble getting an AM station from 250 miles away, but it had a bit added noise, despite physically turning the radio to its best reception.

There is a button on the back that immediately makes the weather tuner override the AM/FM tuner.Since these are tuned separately (as with the CC Observer), you immediately are returned to the AM/FM station you were listening to when pressing the button again. Both companies seem to have considered the convenience of the listener.

The flashlight puts out a meager light, but it works and you can read from it.Bizarrely, you turn it on by pressing the bulb.

There is no handle for the radio, in part, because they have a solar cell on top that would be blocked. The solar cell does work and helps make the radio last longer, but it's not providing the sort of current the crank can.I would much rather have a strap or handle or at least the option to put one there. This could be a deal-breaker for some, as winding the radio is more difficult. It's probably best for people with smaller hands to crank this pressing down on the radio at the edge of a table.

The dials for volume and the AM/FM tuner seem to turn the opposite way from what I would expect.Turning the tuner dial upward makes the tuner selector go downward. This is probably just a quirk of style, but it catches you.

I don't like that there is no headphone jack, but there are ports for an inbound mini-USB connection and another for an external charger. The former port allows one to hook up their cell phone or iPod to play music on this radio, using it as an external speaker.Although I know some people would use this, I think a much more practical thing would be a simple headphone jack for an emergency radio. After all, if someone is trying to minimize power usage on the radio under conditions which will otherwise require a lot of cranking, a headphone would cut out the need to power the relatively large speaker. Also, it would allow usage in situations in which audible sound may not be useful, as when others are sleeping. This is something the CC Observer did right.Fortunately, the sound is reasonable enough that you'd feel okay with playing it for a room at work or home all the time.

You are probably wondering what we did with the radio, since it arrived defective.Well, I called Freeplay to get a replacement antenna and they said they would immediately send a replacement radio instead RMAing the one I had.I agreed to do this, as my time with this defective unit was more than enough to let me feel comfortable that the replacement would properly work for my location. One thing I miss is that the CC Observer had a cell phone charger, but it appeared other people had found their own issues with that when looking at reviews.I guess I'll look for something separate to complement the Eyemax.

Both radios are good units, but the Freeplay Eyemax WB 2009 won me over based on sound quality.

Brunton 81-000009 Explorer - Foldable Solar Panel Review

Brunton 81-000009 Explorer - Foldable Solar Panel
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Full disclosure, didn't buy this from Amazon. However, I know many will look for reviews of this product here before buying in a physical store.

If you want a portable solar panel that works fast (as solar goes) even in relatively low sunlight, this is the charger for you.

If you like products that come without any documentation, directions, warranty cards, compatibility lists, other any thing but just the product, the packing, and what's written on the outside packaging, this is the charger for you.You might conclude that it's a roll of the dice if this will work with your device. And if so, you'd be correct.

If you have a usb-to-(your device) adaptor, that you absolutely, positively know will work with this product (despite them not providing a detailed compatibility listin the packaging or on the website), then this is the charger for you.I plugged in my ipod 5G and even in moderate light it started charging. However (I bet you saw that however coming, didn't you?), my newer ipod, an ipod touch, wouldn't charge with these panels. There wasmuch sadness. I looked on the Brunton web site (and also did the old Google search) to see if it needed a special adapter beyond my genuine apple usb-to-synch cable. None seem to exist. So, if you have an iphone or, like me, have an itouch, or if your device doesn't come with a usb adaptor, you're out of luck. I think it's important to note that this product was released in 2010 - so you think they might have heard of these iphone/itouch thingies - possibly in some obscure news article or whatever-- by now and would want those customers and make the usb compatible with them.

If you only plan to recharge your devices during the day, this is the product for you.Don't confuse this product with similar looking ones that store a charge that you can use to recharge your device later on. With the Brunton Explorer you're just buying solar panels with a usb connection. No other connections. No battery pack. Period. Full stop. When there is no sun, there is no juice.I mention this because the store salesperson didn't seem to understand this and when she pushed this product on me, she assured me it held a charge. She also told me it would work with my iTouch. So, that should tell you a lot right there.

If you like having to buy additional pricy products to make the stuff that's not working (maybe) work, then this is the product you've been waiting for.If you buy one of the Brunton batteries, this product is supposed to charge it for you to use with your device later. These batteries range between $40 and $700 though. From the reviews I've scanned, not clear if the usb charging ability/compatibility is any different, nor are they apparently sturdy, but I digress.

If you don't mind adding two extra pounds (plus up to 5 lbs more if you buy one of the larger Brunton batteries) to your backpack, then this product is awesome to bring with you packing and camping. It folds up and takes up about as much space as a medium-thick magazine folded in half long-ways.

If you're going to lounge around your sunny camp while your stuff recharges, or if you or aren't afraid your stuff is going to get boosted, or your electronics getting rained on, or all of it blown away if it's windy, then you've got a cool little power station going.

But if you went hiking so you could actually go mobile during the daylight hours, and if you (an added bonus) want to look like a dork, you can connect a couple of carabineers to the grommets on it and drape it down the back of your pack, and have wires running from it to your device dangling around on the trail while it charges and you hike around looking like Solar Man.Think about the dimensions of a Playboy Centerfold hanging off your pack (the paper dimensions, dude, not the girl, grow up). Now, don't get me wrong, if you're Jack Bauer and you have to make a planet saving call - dang, I hope Jack doesn't use an iPhone - and, you know, you have to tell the President that his daughter was kidnapped and the girl in his house is really a clone planted by mad scientists, and clone-girl is the mole who sold the nuclear codes to the terrorists, then, by all means, dork up and make that call. Save the world, man. Otherwise, unless it's sort of a 9-1-1 situation these four solar panels are a lot of real estate flopping on your back, and you will, indeed, get some double takes and raised eyebrows.

So, all said, this appears to be more of a car camping solar array. However (yeah, you saw it coming again, you're good), why didn't you just buy a $14 dollar charger and charge in your car on the drive up to camp?If you're using the solar panels to save the environment, that's cool; but go buy the really good array and not the one that's supposed to be portable - that's my point. This appears to be marketed at backpackers, hence the name "explorer" instead of what they must have called it during beta testing "may not work with your stuff and will make you look like a dork if you try to hang it off your pack solar panels."

I returned this and exchanged it for a solar charger I can actually take on an extended hiking trip. It will charge slow, sure, but it WILL charge my devices. However, (gotcha) if you're not like me - and you aren't looking to charge an iphone/itouch/or other too-super-secret-to-include-in-the-box-or-on-the-website-incompatible-usb-devices - then this might really be a good product for you.

I give this two stars for rockin-fast and low-light-sensitive solar panels (even if you won't tell me what they work with, that is very cool). Then, minus a star for marketing it for hikers but not making a more backpack friendly design, and finally minus two stars for not including appropriate documentation on web or in the box thus wasting my time, plus misleading the sales staff, ironically causing me to have to use up more gas driving all the way back to the store and return it - totally offsetting the whole solar power don't kill the earth thing.

GoPro HD Motorsports HERO Camera Review

GoPro HD Motorsports HERO Camera
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this HD camera to replace a VholdR Wearable Camcorder (Black) which didn't survive getting run over by my SUV. The Hero is a well constructed camera, very solid feeling with quality construction.

Pros: The camera has four modes - video (in several resolutions), still pictures, self-timer still pictures, and interval photos (pictures every few seconds). The lens gives a tremendously wide wild view which is nice for HD's 9:16. It will shoot 1080p, 960p 720p (at 30 and 60 frames per second), and 480 (at 60 frames per second) line resolutions. It uses standard SDHC memory cards and has an internal battery which recharges via a USB cable. The recorded audio is very good both inside and outside of the motor sports waterproof case that came with my kit. Video is relatively good, not as vivid as a dedicated camcorder but the resolution is good. My kit came with a variety of mounts and a suction cup mount for windows and car body use. The waterproof case comes with two backs, one that is watertight and one that is not for better audio when waterproof use isn't required. The kit comes with connectors for connecting the camera up to an HDTV monitor (component video) or a TV monitor (composite video). A neat feature in the menu is that you can flip both the video and still photos so you can shoot with the camera upside down without a problem.

Cons: The quick release mounts have a bit of wiggle to them. The back of the waterproof case can be difficult to lock closed. The menu system is a bit troublesome to use as there are only two buttons and three LCD characters to use. Once set you'll not have to go into the menu very often.

Future: There's a connector on the rear that GoPro plans on using for an external battery or a monitor. Neither are available at the time of this review but they are being worked on.

In use on the trail the mounts worked very well. I used the suction cup primarily to mount the camera to my windshield, bumper, side body panel, and side window. Across rugged rocky trails the camera held firm and the video came out very well. The simple interface was easy enough to use. One button to turn the camera on and select the mode and another to stop and start the recording.

Energizer Rechargeable Metal LED 3 Watt Light Review

Energizer Rechargeable Metal LED 3 Watt Light
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this LED light only to have the switch fail the first day.I returned it and got another one and it has been a very good light. It holds a charge for several hours and recharges quickly. I like the charger led status that indicates when recharge is complete. I wish it had come with a carry case. I'm still looking for a case to use with it.

Battery Free 12 LED Crank Powered Lantern Review

Battery Free 12 LED Crank Powered Lantern
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
A great lantern in concept; a dynamo powered LED lantern that uses Ni-Cad batteries, instead of a rechargeable lithium-ion coin cell like you find in many of the dynamo powered LED flashlights on the market today, which can be easily damaged by overcharging, or by leaving the battery uncharged for long periods. Most of these lights will not hold a full charge after a few uses.

Press the "On" button once for 4 LED's, twice for 8, three times for all 12, and a fourth time to turn the lantern off. The overall construction seems sturdy enough, but I had to look through a few of the lanterns on the shelf before I found one that had an "On" switch that seemed to work well. (I bought mine at a local retailer, but it's exactly the same lantern.)

The crank handle for the dynamo turns easily and smoothly. Once I got it home and out of the package, I heard something rattling around inside the base, which after removing the bottom turned out to be a small nut which had fallen off one of the bolts inside the lantern, but this appeared to be a minor issue. All in all, assuming the LED's and Ni-Cad batteries are fairly good quality, it seems to be a good lantern. My only real concern is whether the "On" button will continue to work.
