Great way to charge iPods and iPhones. It serves me as mainly a backup battery when I am out camping, and doesn't take all that long to charge. You can also charge it from a computer! Unfortunalely it probably won't charge your iPad, but it's perfect for iPhones and iPods.

Perfect flashlight for Law Enforcement/Security. Super bright white beam works well for long distance target identification and close up work. Easy one handed operation to access all 3 brightness levels and strobe. Love the fact that it is not necessary to remove the LiIon battery for charging, just snap into AC/DC cradle to top off anytime at home, work or in vehicle. I have over a dozen other tactical lights and this is the one I carry for security. Many holster carry options by Boston Leather and others. Highly recommended to anyone wanting a bright, compact, well designed, American made lifetime warranted flashlight.

Dynamo Illuminator Wind-up LED Flashlight Review

Dynamo Illuminator Wind-up LED Flashlight
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I own both the Garrity Power Lite and the ILLUMINATOR wind-up flashlights. They have the same basic design, but with the following differences:

1. Size: The Illuminator is about the size of a man's electric shaver. It is easier to hold and to crank. The Garrity is bulkier, mainly because of the extra plastic lenses in front. It is also less comfortable to hold because rubber grips on the sides are shorter (see my Customer Image for size comparison)

2. Ease of Cranking: The Illuminator's handle takes very little effort to crank. However, you need to turn it virgorously (2-3 turns per second) in order to charge up the battery. The Garrity's cranking presents more resistence and is noisier. But the good news is that you only need to turn it at around one turn per second to charge up the battery.

3. Light Output: Both flashlights use 3 white LEDs, and have the option to turn on either one or all three. As far as I can tell, the LEDs are identical. The main differnce is that the Illuminator's light output is diffused, while the Garrity added three plastic lenses in front to produce a well-focused beam.

4. Light Duration: When fully charged up, the Illuminator gives out brighter light initially. However, its light dimmed down within a few minutes. After ten minutes, the light becomes barely visible (see my Customer Image above). The Garrity, on the other hand, produces fairly consistent light output for at least one hour!

Based on longer light duration, I would recommend the Garrity over the Illuminator. The Garrity is also cheaper when you order it with free super-saver shipping. (Be carefull when ordering The Illuminator, because some places offer the flashlight for $8-10, but charge another $8 in shipping!)

[The following Info for geeks only]:
Why does the Garrity produce much longer light duration than the Illuminator?

The Illuminator uses one 3.6V Lithium-ion rechargeable button cell (capacity unknown, probably around 30mAh). The Garrity uses 3x 1.25V NiMH cells rated at 80mAh. In my opinion as an electrical engineer, the NiMH design is much better because:

1. Each white LED needs about 20-40mA at 3.6V to produce sufficient light output. Three NiMH cells provide a consistent 3.75V throughout most of the discharge period. The Li-ion cell may provide up to 4V when fully charged, but its voltage drops quickly during discharge to 3.6V and below. This explains why the Illuminator produces a brighter light initially, but dims down much faster.

2. NiMH cells are more robust and can withstand over-charging better than Lithium-ion cells can. Think about it: there are chargers that can fully charge up NiMH cells in 15 minutes (that means charging at 4X), but nothing can charge Li-ion cells in less than one hour. In this case, since you can charge up the battery in one minute and then use it for up to one hour, that means the battery is being charged at 60X! This kind of abuse is not recommended even for NiMH, and it can be murderous for Lithium-ion rechargeable batteries.

[Update on April 9, 2007]
The Lithium-ion rechargeable battery in my Illuminator probably was already damaged (from over-charging) when I did the comparison above. It has deteriorated further since then, and can hardly sustain five minutes of light now.

Brunton SolarFlat Rigid Solor Panel Review

Brunton SolarFlat Rigid Solor Panel
Average Reviews:

Seems well constructed.Has an aluminum frame as mentioned in the description. My only suggestion to make it truly weather proof would be a slightly better seal on the rear terminal block housing.I may silicon it or do something to better seal it for the environment I will be using it in.I considered sealing around the frame but this would seem redundant. The frame appears to just provide physical as opposed to environment protection for the panel. The panel itself seems to be sealed by virtue of how it is constructed.

It also comes with a nice selection of adapters(Cigarette Lighter, Alligator clamps, bare ended pigtail), and an LED adapter plug to check function.I will be using it to trickle charge a battery in a 16KW Backup Generator at a vacation property. The battery is normally charged by the supplied power but only when in Auto Mode.I turn the unit off typically when not occupying the home and therefore the battery runs down.

Razor E100/125/150 Electric Scooter battery Review

Razor E100/125/150 Electric Scooter battery
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I ordered a part that was listed as the replacement part needed for the E100 Razor Scooter, but when it arrived it was not the correct part. When I ordered this part I actually trusted that this would be the part needed. Once I received the part I took apart the scooter and discovered the single battery should have been a dual battery with buit-in wires (sealed wires). When I contacted the company for a refund, I was told that I would have to pay the return shipping. The return shipping would cost more then the part itself and I had already paid that amount in the beginning... I would have actually spent about 3 times what the cost should have been, so needless to say that cost would not be very wise. Like I explained, that was the part the company SAID I needed form the scooter. During conversations I was told that was the "exact" part that I had ordered and they would not pay for my return shipping. My last contact from them stated, "I am very unfamiliar with the harnesses, it is something that we have never sold before. The only ones I have seen they areclipped on. Let me know what you deceide to do." The only option they ever gave me was to pay for the return shipping or order a second one at half price. Thanks but no thanks... My wife found the CORRECT part at another company and it was listed correctly...

I was a little skeptical upon purchasing this but I was pleasantly surprised at how well it works. On the minus side, the battery does pop out of the holder sometimes but once it is secured firmly in the battery holder, it does charge.

On the plus side, it comes with a car charger adapter that works great for those times when you've forgotten to charge the battery and can do so from the car on the way to a venue.

Brunton New SOLARIS i6 Foldable iPod? Solar Charger Review

Brunton New SOLARIS i6 Foldable iPod? Solar Charger
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First off, I live in Sacramento, CA.So it's not the sunniest location, but still pretty dang sunny.

I purchased the Solaris i6 with the intention to be able to charge any of the following: Ipod Video, Ipod Shuffle, Treo Smartphone, Garmin GPS, Bluetooth headset, & AA or AAA batteries.Usage would be mainly around the house, but I am an outdoor enthusiast that would disappear into backcountry whenever possible taking my trusty Ipod as my only real tie to civilization. Therefore, portability, simplicity & durability would be paramount for my outings.

At first tests, the Solaris was TECHNICALLY capable of charging everything EXCEPT the Ipod Video. The shuffle, phone, GPS & Bluetooth were fabulous - no problems there. The AA & AAA batteries were close to impossible.Majority of chargers out there are just not able to work with the current that's created from these panels.I did find a charger that could, however the limit was a single battery at a time!If 2 batteries were placed in the charger, the lights would flicker a little -- but charge. The SECOND a cloud, haze, or anything (possibly even a ladybug!) passed over the sun, the threshold was broken & the battery charger would flash "error."Unfortunately, the charger would either sit there flashing error (& no longer charging) until I came back later thinking my batteries are charged, or I would have to reset the charger by either removing the batteries & re-inserting (or unplugging & re-plugging the charger to the solar panels).So... technically, there probably is a charger out there that can work off of the current that the i6 produces, but in my experience -- I'm as close to finding that charger as I am to finding a cure for Mad Cow Disease. So, expect the stated "3-4 hrs to charge 4 AA batteries" to actually read, "3-4 hrs PER AA battery."As for the Ipod... IMPOSSIBLE as well using the provided Ipod cable.I figured I had a defective Ipod cable -- as the terminal contacts were too small for me to test with my voltage meter.Concluding so, I exchanged the Solaris for another one hoping that the Ipod issue would be resolved.Well, the problem was not resolved.

I can only conclude 1 of 2 conclusions, either: 1) I have terrible luck, & got 2 units with defective cables, or 2) the i6 is not capable of creating enough juice to charge the Ipod Video (at least in my 95 degrees, full-sun early September conditions here in Northern CA).I'm assuming scenario #2.That said, I think it's terrible to tout a product specifically for the Ipod -- yet it can't deliver. As a manufacturer, I'd have tested the product against available generations of Ipods that use the connection that you are providing. There is no disclaimer (except that the lighting conditions may vary from our test type deal, etc.), so it really is disappointing. If you have a USB car adapter however, you can use this with the normal Ipod USB cable & the Brunton provided Female Cig adapter. This WILL charge the Ipod -- but you now have to use 3 items vs. the 1 Brunton Ipod cable. For some this may be insignificant, but for me -- this feels a little jacked-up when you consider the Ipod cable is about $10... which means some of my purchase price is completely wasted. Not to mention the fact that I now have to carry more bulk when outdoors.

So bottom-line, this product is capable of charging an Ipod -- as well as a good majority of SMALL electronics.UN-intentional deception aside, I like the Solaris for what it is capable of delivering in such a portable package.I will however grade them hard, as I believe in delivering on a promise or claim.

On a side note, I am impressed with the Solaris line to the point that I am currently contemplating purchasing the 26 as well for larger electronics (digital SLR batteries & portable DVD players), for longer comfortable basecamps away from power.

One last point to consider... if you are purchasing these units SOLELY for emergency power (cell phones), you might want to consider the 12 or 26 watt Solaris instead. The 6 watts work beautifully under sunny conditions, & at about 25%-50% under light to moderate overcast conditions (but still enough to activate my phone charger).I would doubt though that enough current would be produced under heavier overcast (conditions typically associated with emergency situations) to initiate charging for most cell phones. For those of you thinking, "it's for situations like car trouble on a sunny day (not natural disasters)," let's face it, why would you need something as expensive as solar?... why not go with something like an extra battery... easier & cheaper to buy & carry. With a larger Solaris, there is a greater chance that the panels will collect enough energy to trigger your chargers, as a 10-15% output from the 26 would be most likely enough to activate charging.Just something to think about...

SolaDyne Table Top LED Lantern Review

This is a very nice camping lantern. It looks exactly as it does in the product information section. We bought this lantern for camping and it's exactly what we needed. For us, it's for short term use.
This lantern cranks easily and works as stated in the description... Great if you are going camping,as stated above, and if you need a "back-up" source of light, OR if you need a back-up light when your home's power goes out and you need a light source for temporary use. Since this is just a lantern, it's not meant to be your main source of light, but rather, it is basically a great lantern as a back-up, especially for "short term"emergency situations.

PLEASE note the size: If you need to know the size, we measured it today, and it is approximately 10 inches tall (plus a few millimeters) and 6 inches wide, at the widest part of the lantern. (When you unfold the handle upwards, though, the lantern is taller).

36 Volt Golf Cart Battery Charger for EZ-GO Powerwise Review

36 Volt Golf Cart Battery Charger for EZ-GO Powerwise
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
UPDATE ON 2/18/2010: I went down to my garage this morning and there was a strange smell. I also heard the fan of this SCHAUER running, which it should not have been doing after a night of charging. When I went to the golf cart, the seat was very warm. As I lifted the seat to look at the battery, I saw all of them bubbling. I am not sure why it overcharged the batteries but I now use this as a back-up.

My original review:

I hate when ads use a name in the description that has nothing to do with a product. In this case, the title says "for EZ-GO Powerwise". This is just to get the attention of anyone who is looking to replace their Powerwise battery charger. This is a schauer. It is a generic charger and they provide a Powerwise plug adapter.

Why is it important? Well, the Powerwise is a 50 AMP charger while this is only a 20 AMP charger. So, the Powerwise charges much faster than this knock-off. Also, this is a digital charger while the Powerwise is not. This charger does not provide you any information on how much recharging is needed while the Powerwise has a meter that tells shows you how many amps the battery is taking. With the Powerwise, I can estimate how much time I can use a golf cart if I interrupt the charging process. With the schauer, I have no idea.

OK, now that I have done my ragging, I do have some positives. Despite this being inferior, it actually works. If you charge overnight, the extra time this takes to charge is meaningless, but the fact that it only uses 20 AMPS will help the battery life and allow it to plug into a busy socket. Hopefully, this won't break down, but so far it has worked fine.

Also, this battery charger is much lighter than a Powerwise so it is easy to carry and cheaper to ship.

So, back to ragging. This company does not ship to Hawaii or Alaska. Since I live in Hawaii, I had to get it shipped to a friend in California and they shipped it to me. This added time to the already slow delivery (regular group shipping by them). They can easily solve the problem by just shipping it to Hawaii and charge UPS or USPS prices, but they don't bother.

One of my concerns in riding an eBike was "getting caught" away from home with a dead battery.Further, knowing the distances offered as expected range on the eBikes assumed someone slightly less voluminous than me - that's a mild mannered way of stating I am somewhat rotund. So, it just made sense to have a second battery. This allows me to travel 1 battery's distance away from home, knowing I have a like amount of reserve energy to make it back.Fact is, since using the eBike, I've rarely had to use the second battery to make it home.No surprises with the eBike or the batteries - both work well, and I'm using the older SLA type of battery.m
