I have used this product a handfull of times since I purchased it. I have been very pleased with it's capabilities. Do be aware that it will not charge a battery if the battery contains too little charge, though annoying, this can be overcome by briefly applying a "Jump" to the battery to increase it's potential just enough for the Vector to see the battery is not dead. Also, this Vector has good quality clamps that are all metal (with insulated color coded grips) and won't break like previous models/versions. The manual that comes with this charger is not great but it is adequate enough to use the charger appropriately. The price for the charger seems a bit on the high side but with it's smart charge, alternator check, desulfate mode and other diverse capabilities it could indeed pay for itself quickly. Hopefully the unit will be dependable & reliable for years to come. That would make the price into a bargan deal. Time will tell...

(More customer reviews)I purchased my first Power On Board 25 Amp Fully Automatic Battery Charger from Sam's Club for ten dollars more than the current Amazon price including shipping.The device, alternatively marketed as a Vector or Black & Decker product, requires only a single button push to automatically select the proper charging rate for the attached battery.The peak charge rate is 25A, but the unit can also pump out 75A for up to 1.5 minutes to jumpstart your car.

Lead-acid batteries that have remained in a discharged state for a long time internally build up lead sulfate which can inhibit normal charging. This charger has an operating mode designed to recondition sulfated batteries.

A cooling fan runs while charging, but turns off when charging is complete.The unit then automatically switches to float mode to maintain the battery at full charge.This is very important not only for convenience, but also to prolong battery life.Since the fan turns off after topping off the battery, it works well for building up relatively inexpensive, large capacity, indoor UPSs built around deep cycle batteries (make sure that the battery area is well ventilated and place the battery on an acid resistant drip pan to prevent damaging the floor).

The lightweight, compact, microprocessor controlled charger features a backlit, scrolling LCD display that provides charge rates, status messages and battery diagnostic information.The device is built well, especially considering its low price.The battery clamps have copper contacts and the cabling is heavy gauge.All cables can be stowed inside the charger.

Duracell D2A 2 AMP 12V Battery Maintainer / Charger Review

(More customer reviews)I wanted a charger to keep my car battery charged (but not overcharged!) while I am absent on multi-week trips.So far the Duracell 2 Amp charger seems to be working well.

It is a three-stage charger.The specification says that depending on the current state of the battery, it will do a fast charge to around 80%, then a slower charge to almost full, then finally move to a lower voltage "floating" charge to keep the battery near 100% without overcharging.

I used a multimeter to watch the charging process.My battery was mostly full to start with, so the charger started charging at 14.1 volts (the slow charge mode) and then after a few hours moved to 12.7 volts (for the floating charge).These both seem appropriate voltages.In particular, the floating voltage of 12.7 volts should be safe for long-term battery maintenance.

After about two days on floating charge, my charger's red charging light finally went off.Over the next couple of weeks, when I checked the charger, the red charging light was mostly off but I occasionally noticed it on.It looks like the charger is moving between off and floating charge as needed for sustained maintenance.

I'll have to see how the charger holds up under long-term use, but so far everything looks good.

Update November 2010: I've been using this for two years now and I continue to be very happy with it.It's pleasant to come back from a four week absence to a fully charged car battery, with zero hassles!

Since I assume that things I buy suppose to do the job they should, I will point out things I don't like about this charger. This charger should have Voltmeter. Amp meter can not be trusted. In maintenance mode (that should deliver up to 2 amps) meter was showing over 10A. I checked the real current flow with precision meter and it was only 1A; what good is the measuring instrument being so much of that one can't rely on? I used start boost on battery that was virtually dead; after couple of minute quick charge I tried to start the engine using the boost and had impression that this thing does not deliver promised 200A. Another couple of minute charge, I tried to start again. Third time was the charm. Yet, without this type charger I would have no options - the car was parked in the way that I couldn't use jump cable.
So, general impression is that this charger is made cheap but, bottom line, it can do the job.

If you have ordered the PS3 but received the PS3D instead, return it to Amazon for a full refund - on the ground that the product description does not match the product received.

[Original Review follows]

I already have at least half a dozen smart chargers in the house, including top-of-the-line models such as the La Crosse BC-900 and Maha C9000, but I still wanted this Rayovac Universal Battery Charger (PS3) for the following reasons:

1. It can accept C, D, and 9V batteries in additional to the standard AA and AAA cells.
2. It can handle rechargeable alkaline cells in addition to the standard NiMH or NiCd cells.
3. It has the potential to recharge up to 8 AA or AAA cells at once.

So far, I'm very satisfied with this charger. Of course it is bulky and heavy. But that's to be expected for an unit that can accept four D-cells at the same time. For home use the size and weight is not an issue at all.

I'm happy to report that this charger is a lot smarter than I previously imagined. Unlike a typical dumb charger in this price range (for example: the Energizer CHFCV Overnight Family Charger), the PS3 has four independent charging channels. That means I am free to charge different cell in any channel. Each channel comes with a status indicator LED, which goes out once the cell is fully charged. But most of all, this charger is smart enough to recognize the difference between NiMH cells and alkaline cell, and can pick the correct charging method accordingly.

When an unknown cell is inserted into the PS3, the charger first starts off with a trickle current (800mA peak current at 10% duty cycle, or an average current of 80mA). Based on the voltage profile of this cell, the PS3 can determine whether this is an alkaline cell, or a NiMH cell. After two minutes, the duty cycle is increased to 60%, so the average current is now around 480mA. For a NiMH cell, charging will continue until a negative dV/dt is detected, in which case it switches back to trickle current again. But for an alkaline cell, charging current will gradually decrease with higher terminal voltage until it reached 1.65V.

The Rayovac PS3 is designed to recharge the Rayovac 'Renewal' brand of rechargeable alkaline cells (which are now discontinued). The user manual warned against charging ordinary disposable alkaline cells, but I experimented with it anyway. So far, I have observed very good results with recharging Duracell alkaline AA cells [see warning below]. Of course, the capacity of a recharged alkaline cell is lower than that of a fresh cell, and it drops with each subsequent cycle. But since I can squeeze another half a dozen cycles out of an exhausted alkaline cell at no additional cost, I really should not complain.

Back to the charger itself, I do have a complaint about its claim of"recharge up to 8 AA or AAA batteries". It turns out that each of the four charging channels can accept one to two AA or AAA cells, but the two cells are electrically connected in parallel. So in case somebody accidentally placed two cells of different battery chemistries (NiCd, NiMH, or alkaline) in the same channel, the one with lower voltage will discharge the other one. The charger may also get confused and fail to terminate correctly in such case. It is safer and faster to charge only one AA or AAA cells in each channel.

[WARNINGS:]
1. Do NOT try to recharge alkaline cells that are completely exhausted (terminal voltage below 1V). It will not work.

2. Do NOT try to recharge Energizer alkaline cells. Four Energizer AA cells I tested completely dropped dead after just two discharge/charge cycles. Two D-cells started leaking electrolyte a few days after charging. Luckily they were left outside and not being used.

[Update on Jan 26, 2009]
Out of maybe one dozen Duracell AA alkaline cells I have recharged, two started leaking electrolyte a few weeks later. I must now officially advise AGAINST recharging disposable alkaline cells: do it at your own risk!

(More customer reviews)I just got this charger - *beware* Amazon has falsely indicated that this unit supports battery reconditioning - It doesn't - that is why I got it! I can't tell if the other units have it or not as I don't believe amazon's site and B&D's doesn't say so - however the review on the VEC 1093 says it reconditions. AMAZON please update the desciptions and picts on these products to be more clear!

That said - the unit is well enough designed although I wish it didn't have a noisey fan running all the time and the control panel feels cheap - but it works. The readout of battery voltage is a nice touch. I would recommend this IF the VEC 1095 doesn't support reconditioning - otherwise I would spend the extra $ and get that one.

I still may return this if I can find out what the VEC 1095 has

Schumacher SC-8000A Speedcharge Charger/Maintainer Review

(More customer reviews)The meter accuracy on the SC-800A was within 0.05 volts, and the charging algorithms appear to work well, although they are not described in the instructions.

I observed that the voltage was generally limited to 15.5 for regular, 16.0 for deep cycle, and 14.7 for AGM batteries.The 30 amp capability is in the form of a long timed pulse of about 2 minutes followed by 12 amps for a similar time period, then repeating until the voltage has risen enough that it isn't required.The amperage isn't constant, it tapers down to limit the voltage in typical CC/CV fashion, although the algorithm appears to actually be more complex.For instance, on a particular AGM battery it went to 15.5 volts near the end of the charge (95%) with current at about 1.5 amps for about 30 minutes and then stopped (completed).I suspect that this was an automatic attempt to condition the battery.A DieHard 71227 charger (Schumacher makes the DieHard 71227 charger) did the same thing.After three discharge cycles, it stoped doing the "high-voltage treatment".Also, in AGM mode it went to 15.5 volts briefly during one of the 40 amp cycles.Although the instructions for DieHard Platinum and Odyssey batteries say to choose a charger with <14.8 volts, this charger was obviously designed with these batteries in mind.

Two small negative notes.If a battery has voltage close to zero, the safety features won't let it operate.Also, if the AC power cycles, it will come back on as a charger set for 2 amps in regular battery mode after 15minutes.I wouldn't recommend leaving an AGM battery connected in maintenance mode.It's odd that the charger doesn't store the last used settings in the microprocessor's eeprom, or just use battery power to keep the processor running.

Overall, it's a nice charger.I hope some of the tech info above helps.

(More customer reviews)As my title states, this charger handles all four main types of large batteries: Lead Acid Auto Starter batteries, Deep Cycle Marine, AGM and Gel Cell.You select battery type and size and it takes care of the rest.When you first hook up the clips to the battery and plug in the charger, selecting battery type, it tests the battery and gives you the volts available as well as the percentage that battery is currently charged!Many times I've wanted to know that.You then select battery size and it starts charging.If you select 15 or 10 amps, when the battery is fully charged it goes into a maintenance mode automatically!You can leave the charger running forever - and it won't over charge the battery.Also - if your battery is damaged by sulfide build up, it detects that and runs a cycle to clean the battery and give it life again if it can.Wow.I wonder how many batteries I've replaced that could have been revived or kept alive by this charger?!This is going to save me a lot of money.

I purchased a new 850 cc amp deep cycle battery to use as an emergency power source for my amateur radio equipment (I'm a net control storm spotter for the National Weather Service Skywarn network).This brand new battery tested at 95% charged - so I fully charged it (while using the radio) and it worked fine.Charged up to 100% and went into maintenance mode automatically.Took the charger to the farm and connected it to a dead tractor battery.Showed 11% charged and began building the charge immediately.Was up to 15% in about 7 minutes when I had to leave.I'll have to update this review later to let you know if it was able to salvage that poor battery.

I know of no other chargers that test the battery, charge all types of batteries and can safely be left on to maintain them as well.Go check out the cost of Gel Cell battery chargers - and you'll find this is a deal.

BTW, if you forget to turn it from 'test' to 'charge', after 10 minutes or so this charger will automatically charge up the battery and keep it maintained for you!How easy is that?

(More customer reviews)I am fortunate enough to maintain two houses - one in the mid-West for the summer and a second one in the Palm Springs area for the winter. Rather than drive 1500 miles each way I have a couple of cars in each location so each set will sit idle for six months of the year which means I usually have two dead batteries when I arrive for the season. I tried a cheaper brand of trickle charger in the desert last year and it worked but I was afraid that if it burned out I would still return to dead batteries. I really like the quality of the Schumacher products having two of their multifunction battery chargers that have worked well for over 10 years. When I saw that they offered high quality trickle chargers I bought two of them to make the switch to worry free charging. The chargers are well built and heavy for their size and the build quality is typical Schumacher. The chargers are intended to be installed in the engine compartment with battery connections that are permanently connected to the charger and for power a short plug comes out of the side of the unit and is easily connected to a grounded extension cord. I really didn't want to install these under the hood even though they supply the mounting brackets and screws required but I did like the idea of the permanent connection to the battery as opposed to a clamp which could fall off in the middle of the season and leave me with a dead battery. Remembering how the chargers connected in the Power Wheels toys my sons had several years ago, I was able to find polarity keyed plug connectors in the trailer wiring section of the local auto parts store and now have a shortpigtail permanently connected to the battery and the ability to plug and unplug it into the charger when I want. Now I have the best of all worlds, the security of a solid connection to the battery and the flexibility of being able to plug and unplug the charger with ease. I like this a lot.

(More customer reviews)I purchased this charger to charge the battery on my lawn tractor, that's all (although this will work for all of my vehicles too)!I didn't want aportable unit to jumpstart a vehicle or charge other accessories (this is just a vehicle batter charger like the box says).This charger is very simple to use with a one-touch button interface to get things going.I don't know anything about charging batteries or jumping vehicles but I was able to set this up and start charging in about 1 minute.

The included instructions are easy to follow and the charger is ready to go right out of the box.Connect the terminals per the instructions for what you are charging; plug the charger into a standard wall outlet (check for fault light indicating an incorrect connection) then press the one and only button to toggle to the desired amp level (explained in the instructions).

The amp levels are easy to see so selecting the correct one is easy to do.This charger is also fully automatic and will properly charge the battery on it's own at it's own pace for best performance and battery safety.The charger will tell you when it's done charging or if anything is wrong (if that's the case it will display the fault light or will just shut down).

I really like the foolproof design and features (the cables store in the back of the charger) of this simple easy to use charger.I'm not a very handy guy and electricity does make me a little nervous, but using this charger has been a great experience and a joy to use.Whether pro or beginner if you need a battery charger but are a little intimidated by the experience try this one you'll love it!

Built-in Safety Precautions
The Smart Battery Charger also has a spark-resistant reverse hook-up and overcharge protection circuit built into it to insure that the clamps are not accidentally affixed to the wrong terminals, which would damage the battery. The automatic float mode monitoring tells the unit when the battery is ready to avoid overcharging.

(More customer reviews)This jewel is very light to pack a 50Amp punch.I connected it to a battery insufficient to turn over the starter.The guy working on the house left his light on in the truck bed.I connected the charger to the battery while in the 2Amp mode, then plugged the battery charger into the 120VAC receptacle.I then switched it to the 50Amp selection and allowed to charge the battery for 4-5 minutes.While the charger was still connected to the battery, the guy was able to start his truck.Man was I blown away.Following the instructions, I changed the charging selection switch to the 2Amp mode, disconnected the charger from the 120VAC receptacle, and then disconnected it from the battery.How sweet - no arcing, no sparking.This is a must have!!!Excellent value and quality.

(More customer reviews)First, let me say that this charger performs flawlessly and deserves five stars when it is in charging mode. I have used it for three years and hundreds of successful charging cycles on a dozen different batteries of various sizes and types.

However, on two different occasions and with two different batteries (both brand new when hooked to the charger) I left them in "trickle charge" mode. The batteries were part of an emergency communications station that must to be ready at any time with full batteries. This charger burned up both batteries after three months of trickle charging. This mode is supposed to allow a battery to be hooked up indefinitely and maintain it at peak performance. Not destroy it. Other folks in the emergency communications service use other chargers and leave them in trickle mode for years. DO NOT use this charger for that kind of operation.

(More customer reviews)I am an avid Diver and can be found on most weekends underwater somewhere in Northern California or the Channel Islands.I LOVE my SeaDoo VS Supercharged Scooter!Highly recommended for all levels of divers, from beginners to advanced.It is rated for 100', but I know that it can handle 130'.I regularly use it for fun diving and while teaching.I often give other divers a tow when they are tired.

The only challenge you will have with it is maintenance if it ever needs it. I've only found one organization that repairs them - GA Services, LLC in Irvine, CA.

Make sure you check your seals before each dive, keep the prop clear of kelp and debris, and rinse it well after each dive.It will serve you very well.
